Notice of the death of Mr. E. Roe
In the last issue of “Gospel Tidings” a sermon by Mr. E. Roe was included in which the following appeared.
“The person who has been helped to hold fast to the end will not be saved by his holding, but he will have the testimony of a good conscience (and that makes a good bed fellow), and receive at the last, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant,—enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” (Matthew 25, 21). Many a poor soul with more to suffer than we, has been helped to hold fast unto the end and has died in peace with God, through precious blood, giving all the honour to grace, and now is where we hope one day safely to arrive, “Walking with Him in white: for they are worthy” (see Revelation 3, 4). If we are to be with God’s “few” we shall be cast out by the many. The Head hold us fast and we shall “Hold fast the Head” (Col. 2, 19). Let the Lord’s own words be my ending this evening, “But that which ye have already hold fast till I come” (Revelation 2, 25),—till I come.”
How fully these things have been realised by our friend. He spoke out of a “felt”, an experimental knowledge; now he is proving the full truth of that which he believed and taught, for, as the page proofs of this issue
were being corrected, we heard of the Lord’s call to our friend which terminated his “Occupation” in which he had been maintained and so richly blessed for so many years.
The publishers of “Gospel Tidings” wish to express their sympathy in Christian love to the widow of our friend and every member of the bereaved family. May the Lord grant to them, and to the many praying readers of this publication, the possession of,—
“—the wings of faith to rise
Within the veil, and see
The saints above, how great their joys,
How bright their glories be,”
and thereby have their faith so increased to enable them to declare, with Mr. Roe, “THAT GOSPEL CANNOT BE WRONG. I am sure it is not.”
