CARING AND NOT CARING
Notes of a sermon by Stanley Delves
‘Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God,
which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ
Jesus.” Philippians 4.6-7.
The words express the tender sympathy Paul felt for the brethren in
their trials.
A certain amount of care necessary and not forbidden, but the care
forbidden is:
1. The care of distraction.
2. Care that involves unbelief in the promise and faithfulness of God.
3. Care that excludes time and thought for the concerns of the soul.
4. Care that springs from covetousness and prosperity.
But instead of this distraction let your requests be made known in everything.
1. In providence 2. For the body. 3. For the soul. Your requests:
1. That God would give us faith and patience to do His will.
2. That all things might be sanctified to our good and profit.
3. That we might be brought honourably through life.
And the peace of God:
1. The peace of God’s nature and being, solemn, real, and eternal.
2. Peace with God, reconciliation and pardon. (No peace to the wicked).
3. Peace that stands in the power of God, and divinely spoken into the soul.
4. Peace felt: (a) In the conscience, (b) In the mind, (c) In the heart.
5. Peace with respect to: (a) Circumstances (b) Death (c) Eternity.
