Come Holy Spirit

Article / By Andrew Rowell / September 29, 2021

COME HOLY SPIRIT

Come Holy Spirit come; in Thy transforming power, Oh! Come to me I pray, in this my needy hour; Renew my will, my life conform,

Make me like Christ, with ardour warm.

Come as the Breath of God, wake up my sleepy soul, And bring my every power beneath my Lord’s control; That all I think, and do, and say,

May glory bring to Him each day.

Come Holy Spirit, come, breathe on Christ’s Church we pray, Revive these bones so dry, Thy quickening power display; Those bones by Satan spread abroad,

Unite them all in Christ their Lord;

May we yet see the prayer uttered by God’s own Son, That all the diverse parts in Him may be made one; That all that dwell on earth may know

God’s Son came here His love to show.

Come Holy Spirit, come, to take the veil away,

From those of Israel’s race, which blinds them still today; May they by faith the pierced One view,

And own Him their Messiah too.

May they be grafted in the olive tree supplied,

From which they were removed, when Christ was crucified; Fulfil the mystery, hid from sight,

Gentile and Jew in Christ unite.

Come Holy Spirit, come, change our society,

Where crime and violence, through godlessness we see; Fulfil the prayer taught by God’s Son,

His perfect will on earth be done.

As waters fill the sea, so may God’s word abound,

God’s glory, and Christ’s Church, in every land be found; The gospel’s influence increase,

To usher in a time of peace.

Then come, Lord Jesus come, In God’s appointed day,
When earth shall be destroyed,

And all sin swept away;

In judgment day grant I may stand
With those who are at Christ’s right hand.
