FREE GRACE
The free love and favour of God is a lamp to the soul in the darkest night – a sweet lump that will sweeten the most bitter
cup-a singular cordial against all faintings. It will be armour of roof against all temptations; it will be an everlasting arm under all afflictions, and a sun and shield in every condition. If
your graces, or outworks, are so clouded and darkened that you are beat out of your outworks, run to the free grace of God, as to your royal fort, as to your strong tower, as to your City of refuge, where you may be safe and happy for ever.
God’s love to His dear children is a free love, having no motive or foundation but within itself. All the links of salvation are made up of free grace. The people of God are freely loved Deut 8.6-8), and freely chosen (Jn 15.16-19), and freely accepted (Eph 1.6), and freely reconciled (2 Cor 5.18-20), and freely saved (Eph 2.5). ‘By grace are ye saved’ (v8).
Thus all the rungs of Jacob’s ladder, that reaches from heaven to earth, are all made up of free grace. Free grace is the foundation of all spiritual and eternal mercies. Free grace is the solid bottom and foundation of a Christian’s comfort in this world. Free grace will sweeten all your mercies, arm you against all temptations, support you in all your changes, and take off all Satan’s accusations.
